'Sherlock Holmes' Steps In To Sponsor 'Family Guy' Variety Show
'Sherlock Holmes' is on the case. The film has stepped in to take Microsoft's place after the software giant abruptly dropped out of Fox's upcoming Seth MacFarlane 'Family Guy' variety special last week, citing the show's crude humor as something that "did not fit with the Windows brand." The Guy Ritchie-directed flick, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, will be the sole sponsor of the 'Family Guy Presents: Seth & Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show' event, which will now include a sneak preview of the December release. And according to what we're hearing, the latest depiction of Holmes on the big screen is a far cry from what we've previously seen of the detective. He's a martial arts devotee with a mind to go along with the moves. His sidekick, Watson, is no slouch either. Producer Lionel Wigram, who came up with the idea for the new take on Holmes, insists that the character is much more akin to Conan Doyle's original. "Every single thing we have Sherlock Holmes do comes from the books," Wigram tells the 'Los Angeles Times'. "But we live in the world of big event movies. The stakes have to be huge. You have to have an extra supernatural element." Toward that end, the film -- while it includes details from various Holmes books -- does not follow one story in particular. Instead, it focuses on Holmes' battle with Lord Blackwood, a figure inspired by the Victorian occultist Aleister Crowley who is known today for his magical writings, especially 'The Book of the Law', the central sacred text of Thelema. 'Sherlock Holmes' will hit theaters on Christmas Day.
