An Ohio police chief who was accused of stealing items from the surrogate mother who carried Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick's twin daughters has been convicted of three felonies.
A jury found suspended Chief Barry Carpenter guilty of receiving stolen property, theft in office and tampering with evidence. However, he was acquitted on charges of burglary and unauthorized used of property or services.
Carpenter, along with another police chief, was accused of meeting with freelance photographers and trying to sell items such as photos, pictures of ultrasounds, and legal documents about the surrogacy agreement.
He was caught after one of the photographers alerted the surrogacy agency, which reported the thefts to police.
The 17-year police veteran claimed he only went into the house to secure it after noticing a door ajar.
He said he took photos of a surrogacy file that contained two ultrasound photos and of a cast of a pregnant stomach but did not take anything from the home. He admitted he met with paparazzi, since it was caught on tape, but said he didn't discuss selling any of the items and it was just a 'joke'.
Carpenter could face up to 10 years in prison. He has been ordered to home confinement and will be tracked at all times with a GPS device until the December 10 sentencing.
"The bottom line is that there is a victim in this case whose privacy was so gravely intruded upon," said Ohio Assistant Attorney General Emily Laube. "If you can't trust the police, who can you trust?"
