James Cameron's 'Avatar' may have broken box office records, but his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow made Oscar history.
Her gritty Iraq war drama, 'The Hurt Locker', was named Best Motion Picture of the Year and she became the first woman to ever win Best Director at the Annual Academy Awards.
'The Hurt Locker' took home the awards for Original Screenplay, Sound Design, Sound Mixing, Film Editing, Direction and Picture. It collected a field-leading six Oscars, out of nine chances. Avatar took home three Oscars, for Art direction, Cinematography and Visual Effects.
Sandra Bullock capped off the best year of her career with a win for Best Actress for 'The Blind Side' and, after years in the industry, Jeff Bridges finally scored an Oscar for Best Actor for his role in 'Crazy Heart'.
"Did I really earn this or did I just wear you all down?," she said after accepting the statue. "I have so many people to thank for my good fortune in this lifetime and this is a once in a lifetime experience, I know."
Bullock thanked "all the people who have been good to me when it wasn't fashionable, and all the people who were mean to me, including George Clooney who threw me in a pool years ago, I'm still holding a grudge about that."
"I would like to thank what this film was to me, which are the moms who take care of the babies and the children no matter where it is they come from." She then thanked her own mother for teaching her there is "no race, no religion, no class system, no color, no sexual orientation that makes us better than anyone else; we are all deserving of love."
Jeff Bridges also thanked his own parents after his win: "Thank you mom and dad for turning me on to such a groovy profession. This is honoring them as much as it is me."
Bridges spoke about how his father, the late actor Lloyd Bridges, used to sit him down and teach him the basics of acting.
