Universal Cancels Plans For 'Dark Tower' Film Trilogy
The studio officially announced it was moving ahead with the project last September, with Ron Howard onboard to direct the first film. But Universal decided to pass after it reportedly couldn't get the budget down to give it the project a greenlight. They wanted to scale down the risky project to a manageable budget but the number crunchers were unable to get it down to a number to Universal's liking. This marks the second time a 'Dark Tower' adaptation has hit a wall. The first involved JJ Abrams and 'Lost' co-creator Damon Lindeolf. The seven books, which incorporates themes from multiple genres, follow a Gunslinger and his quest toward the fabled tower. The novels have sold more than 30 million copies in 40 countries around the world.
