'Twilight: Breaking Dawn' Takes $283.5 Million Global Bite: [ send to a friend ]
'Twilight: Breaking Dawn' opened with a massive $283.5 million worldwide over the weekend as fans of the vampire saga filled theaters for the beginning of a two-part finale.
The fourth installment of the franchise grossed $139.5 million in the United States, making it the fifth largest opening in the domestic box office, and $144 million abroad.
'Breaking Dawn' had been criticized as a "boring mess" that didn't deliver but that didn't seem to matter for the Twihards who lined up to watch the supernatural love story.
Not a bad opening for a film that not only covered its $110 budget but made multiples of it in just one weekend.
Eighty percent of the film's audience was female, the core fan base for the Stephanie Meyer books.
Meanwhile, 'Happy Feet Two' opened with just $22 million. Unfortunately, it won't get any easier next weekend for the animated feature with family films 'Arthur Christmas', 'Hugo' and Disney's 'The Muppets all set to open.
'Immortals' placed third $12.3 million, followed by 'Jack and Jill' with $12 million and 'Puss in Boots' rounded out the top five with $10.7 million.
