After nearly a week on the defensive from Newt Gingrich's explosive reaction to the question about his ex-wife during the debate, CNN's John King says that the former Speaker's claim about offering witnesses to ABC News to refute the story was not true.
"The story is false," Gingrich had said during the debate. "Every personal friend who knew us in that period says the story was false. We offered several of them to ABC to prove it was false. They weren't interested because they would like to attack any Republican."
But King says Gingrich's campaign admitted the claim wasn't true after ABC assured him that never happened.
"Tonight, after persistent questioning by our staff, the Gingrich campaign concedes now Speaker Gingrich was wrong — both in his debate answer, and in our interview yesterday," King said. "Gingrich spokesman RC Hammond says the only people the Gingrich campaign offered to ABC were his two daughters from his first marriage."
Gingrich's daughters from his first marriage had already released a statement in defense of their father before the interview on ABC.
