DC Comics Plans Seven Book Prequel For 'Watchmen'

DC is returning to the world of 'Watchmen' with a seven book prequel series called 'Before Watchmen'.

The publisher plans to release a graphic novel each week that will focus on the characters' lives and adventures in the years before 'Watchmen'.

It promises that each issue of the mini-series will be inter-connected with each other and build on the mythology of the best-selling graphic novel.

"It's our responsibility as publishers to find new ways to keep all of our characters relevant," say DC Entertainment co-publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee. "After 25 years, the Watchmen are classic characters whose time has come for new stories to be told."

"We sought out the best writers and artists in the industry to build on the complex mythology of the original."

The characters the prequel will focus include Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, Nite Owl, Ozymandias, Silk Spectre, Comedian and the Minutemen.

'Watchmen', created by writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons, was originally published by DC Comics between 1986 and 1987. In 2010, Moore revealed that DC offered to give him the rights to 'Watchmen' back if he would agree to prequel and sequel projects.

At the time, Moore said that "if they said that 10 years ago, when I asked them for that, then yeah it might have worked but these days I don't want Watchmen back. Certainly, I don't want it back under those kinds of terms."

Though Moore has no involvement in the new prequel project, Gibbons has given the idea his blessing.

"The original series of Watchmen is the complete story that Alan Moore and I wanted to tell. However, I appreciate DC's reasons for this initiative and the wish of the artists and writers involved to pay tribute to our work. May these new additions have the success they desire," says Gibbons.
