Lucy Liu Is Watson To Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock In CBS' 'Elementary'

A week after casting Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes, CBS has signed on Lucy Liu to play Watson in its pilot for 'Elementary'.

In its modern take on the detective, Sherlock will be portrayed as a recovering addict who takes on cases in present day New York City as a consultant to the NYPD.

Joan Watson will be a former surgeon who becomes a trusted friend to Holmes and looks after him.

Jonny Lee Miller most recently appeared on television as the season five villain on 'Dexter' while Liu currently stars in 'Southland'.

Some may look at the casting of Watson as a woman as a daring choice. However, CBS may be merely trying to stay away from any homoerotic undertones and recreate the familiar dynamic found in many of its dramas.

Not to mention, executives are working hard to differentiate the series from the highly successful British 'Sherlock' to avoid any legal issues with producers of the BBC version.

Let's just hope the drama doesn't turn into a 'will they or won't they' premise each week.
