NBC Renews 'Smash' For Second Season But Showrunner Steps Down
The Broadway-set series has become the network's second pickup this season after 'Grimm'. 'Smash' has been averaging 7.7 million viewers on Monday nights, doubling ratings in the 10 PM time slot over the previous year. The musical drama, starring Katharine McPhee (photos While the series isn't cheap to produce, the project is one close to NBC chairman Robert Greenblatt, who brought the series with him as he made the move from Showtime. Meanwhile, series creator Theresa Rebeck has announced she will step down as showrunner so she can return her focus to theater. She will stay on as an executive producers and could pen scripts for 'Smash' but she's opted to relinquish day-to-day duties.
