Timothy Poe gained sympathy from the judges after saying he developed a speech impediment from a war injury in Afghanistan but the military says it has no record of him being injured.
"By the time I turned and went to jump on my guys, I yelled 'grenade' and the blast had hit me," Poe said in his audition.
He claimed his stutter was due to a brain injury he suffered in the blast from a rocket-propelled grenade attack. The audience responded with applause after his audition.
However, the Minnesota National Guard says Poe was not injured in the month he was deployed to Afghanistan in 2009..
"We looked very closely at his record," says spokesman Lt. Col. Kevin Olson. "We did not find something to substantiate what he said."
The country-singing contestant's ex-wife also claims lying is second nature for Poe, who apparently doesn't stutter when he sings.
"Anytime I have caught him in lies or it would get bad, he would just move," Kelly Ballard tells the New York Post.
"It was disturbing. I think he is sick. I don't know if he believes all this stuff or what. His whole world is a big lie, and I don't know where it begins and ends."
"I had him arrested in June 2002 for domestic violence. He went to jail. Then I felt bad, and I bailed him out. Then he left, and I didn't see him anymore."
