England's Damson Dene Hotel is making headlines for replacing all of the bibles in their rooms with copies of E.L James' best-selling erotic novel, 'Fifty Shades of Grey'.
Hotel owner Jonathan Denby says putting religious books in someone's bedroom is "wholly inappropriate" although he admits replacing it with the erotic novel wasn't his first choice.
"I was thinking originally of putting in a book by Ayn Rand. Atlas Shrugged was my first thought," he said, but "because everybody is reading Fifty Shades of Grey, we thought it would be a hospitable thing to do, to have this available for our guests, especially if some of them were a little bit shy about buying it because of its reputation."
Denby says the hotel has received dozens of angry emails about the decision to replace the Bible.
"People in the States feel much more strongly," he says. "We've had quite a few e-mails quoting the scriptures to us and suggesting that it would be a good thing to put the Bible back."
"I've been called a puppet of Satan," he adds, insisting the change was made because of the popularity of the novel and not for any philosophical reason.
"Fifty Shades of Grey" focuses on the relationship between successful businessman Christian Grey and recent college graduate Anastasia Steele. The book contains detailed depictions of sex acts with its main characters engaging in bondage, sadomasochism and other exploits
Parish priest Michael Woodcock tells a local paper that "it is a great shame that Bibles have been removed from rooms and very inappropriate to have been replaced by an explicit erotic novel.. The Bible remains a source of comfort and inspiration that many people do find helpful."
The hotel is accommodating those who want to read the Bible by making copies available at the reception desk.
