In a company earnings call on Tuesday, Walt Disney CEO Robert Iger announced Joss Whedon will return for 'The Avengers' sequel.
Whedon will once again direct as well as help write the follow-up to the Marvel blockbuster that raked in $1.5 billion worldwide.
Iger also said Whedon, who created 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer', 'Firefly' and 'Dollhouse', is helping to develop a live-action TV series for ABC based in Disney's Marvel universe.
"Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015," Marvel says in its own statement.
"As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel's The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel's cinematic universe."
At this time, 'The Avengers' sequel is slated for a May 4, 2014 release.
Currently, Robert Downey Jr. is filming 'Iron Man 3,' which will release next May. The second installments of 'Thor' (entitled 'The Dark World') and 'Captain America' (entitled 'The Winter Soldier') will be out in November 2013 and April 2014, respectively.
